Former President Trump has yet again declared he would influence FIFA to remove global soccer tournament games from a venue based on municipal politics, with Massachusetts now being the most recent urban area to encounter such warnings from the White House. Furthermore, Trump suggested he would contemplate similar action against Los Angeles for the 2028 Summer Games due to potential security concerns.

While Trump lacks official jurisdiction to directly relocate either event, he is able to apply pressure the organizing committees managing each event to shift venues.

Context of Remarks

These comments were made during a media briefing with Javier Milei, who was at the White House following the disclosure of a multibillion-dollar financial assistance for the Latin American nation. Toward the end of the event, a journalist asked Trump about a current “street takeover” in Boston where law enforcement were targeted and a patrol car was set on fire. The correspondent also questioned if these incidents could cause the revocation of tournament responsibilities for the expanded World Cup.

“We could take them away,” Trump remarked regarding the FIFA World Cup matches, scheduled to be hosted at the Foxborough venue. “She is ineffective … she’s radical left, and activists are dominating parts of the city. That’s a major assertion, isn't it?”

Street Takeovers and Political Context

Public disruptions, a social media-driven trend where groups of people gather on public avenues after dark to engage in dangerous driving, have emerged as a frequent nuisance in US urban areas since the lockdown closures. Current similar events have become aggressive in the region, notably in the city. However, these occurrences are usually not seen as associated with any particular partisan agenda.

“When a mayor is performing poorly, and I perceive there’s unsafe conditions, I will call the organization's president, who is phenomenal, and tell him it should be shifted to another location,” he commented on Tuesday. “And he would do that. He might not prefer doing it, but he’d do it. Very easily, he'd comply.”

FIFA Relationship

Gianni Infantino has publicly acknowledged his attempts to be publicly aligned with Trump before the 2026 event, scheduled to be organized in multiple US locations across the US along with two in Canada and a few in Mexico. The head has participated at various presidential events, facilitated Trump hand over the club tournament cup after the concluding game, and has even rescheduled his the group's assembly to accompany Trump on a journey to the Arab region previously.

LA Games Warning

On Tuesday, Trump’s answer to a inquiry about the Massachusetts city extended to a parallel statement regarding the LA Olympic event.

“When I thought the city was failing to be sufficiently organized, I'd move it to another location as needed,” he remarked. “Regarding that event I’d probably have to secure a different kind of permission, but we will do that.”

The former president also questioned California governor Newsom’s management of recent California fires, saying that a parallel incident could cause the relocation of the event.

“If the governor refuses to cooperate, we are going to have to be strict,” the former president commented.

The warning was equally direct for the Massachusetts city.

“Boston should clean up their act,” he remarked. “It's I will say.”
