Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from AI Company's Directors
One-time economic leader Larry Summers is departing from the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a batch of electronic messages between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became widely known.
He commented in a release that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have contributed, excited about the prospects of the enterprise, and anticipate following their advancement".
The prominent academic, who previously presided over the prestigious university, announced on recently that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his connections with Epstein.
Message Exchange
The newly public messages showed that the official exchanged messages with the financier until the eve of the financier's 2019 arrest for suspected human trafficking of young people.
In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company said it accepted Summers' choice to step down.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the perspective he provided to the directors," OpenAI stated.
Legislative Background
This announcement comes after the two houses of Congress voted on Tuesday to pass a bill that would mandate the US justice department to release its records on Epstein.
The legislation will subsequently move to the desk of President Trump for endorsement. He has said he intends to approve the bill, after modifying his position on the issue following pushback from his followers.
Email Contents
A collection of financier-linked correspondence made public by the Congressional committee last week included multiple high-profile figures in the Epstein's previous network, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those figures.
The emails showed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with the billionaire often attempting to link the official to prominent global figures.
Personal Accountability
After the messages were released with the wider community, the former official stated he accepted "full responsibility for my poor choice to continue corresponding with the financier".
He further stated that he hoped "to reestablish faith and fix relationships with the persons closest to me".
Previous Positions
The economist held senior posts under Democratic administrations; functioning as treasury secretary under the former president, and as director of the White House economic team under Barack Obama.
He presided over the university from 2001 to 2006 and is still a academic there. When stating his departure from public roles recently on this week, he stated he would maintain his academic responsibilities.
Additional Consequences
Following the economist's statement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a progressive policy institute in Washington where he was a prominent member, confirmed that Summers was not associated with the organization.
The former official joined the leadership of the AI company, which makes the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its CEO OpenAI's head.
