Ayoub El Kaabi's Stunning Strike Caps The Atlas Lions' Win Against Comoros in Africa Cup of Nations First Game.

The the Moroccan side overcame a nervy beginning to overcome Comoros in the competition's opening game on the weekend, after strikes by the Real Madrid attacker and super-sub Ayoub El Kaabi in the second half.

This constituted a less than dominant showing, however, from the highly fancied Moroccans, who sit 97 places higher than the tiny Indian Ocean nation in the world rankings and had to grind out for the points in rainy conditions at the national stadium.

Tense Start and Missed Chances

The hosts missed an early spot-kick and were locked at 0-0 at half-time even with controlling possession, finally breaking the deadlock in the 11th minute of the second half.

The goal arrived after Noussair Mazraoui did well to prevent the ball from going out before laying it square for Brahim Díaz to calmly pass into the net.

Every first match is never easy but we delivered in the second half,” commented Morocco coach Regragui.

The Substitute's Moment of Brilliance

The tension was subsequently eased by a piece of sheer genius from Ayoub El Kaabi. Only ten minutes after coming on, the striker connected with a ball into the box with a stunning overhead kick in the 74th minute, making it two and ensuring the win.

Earlier in the match, the Moroccan team could have been ahead in the 11th minute after a spot-kick was given for a foul on Díaz. However, Rahimi's penalty was saved by Comoros goalkeeper Yannick Pandor.

Comoros Resistance and Second-Half Chance

Comoros comfortably held Morocco at bay before the Moroccans' greater quality eventually made the difference.

Shot-stopper Pandor made a number of other fine saves to keep down the scoreline as the game wore on, although Comoros did have a clear opportunity for an equaliser shortly after Díaz's goal, with Rafiki Saïd shooting straight at keeper Bounou.

Injury Concern for Morocco

The three points was partially overshadowed by an injury to the skipper, Romain Saïss, who limped off in the 18th minute in tears.

This centre-back had just made his comeback to the international setup recently following a lengthy absence due to ankle surgery.

The win extends the team's historic run of successive wins to 19, surpassing the old record of 15 set by Spain between 2008 and 2009.
